The RTL at $44,950 is the entry point and gets you the full V-6 AWD powertrain with 21 MPG combined — the same engine and drivetrain as every trim above it. Unless you specifically need towing hardware, the Blackout styling package, or TrailSport off-road capability, the RTL covers the bases without paying for features you may not use.

Both share the same 285-hp V-6, 10-speed automatic, and AWD, but the TrailSport is tuned toward off-road use and starts at $48,650 — $3,700 more than the RTL. The TrailSport also rates slightly lower on fuel economy (20 MPG combined vs. 21 for the RTL), which is a typical trade-off for off-road-oriented hardware.

Every Passport in the lineup runs a 285-hp, 262 lb-ft Regular Gasoline V-6 paired with a 10-speed automatic and standard AWD — there are no front-wheel-drive or four-cylinder options.

RTL, RTL Towing, and RTL Blackout all return 19 city / 25 highway / 21 combined MPG, while the TrailSport family (TrailSport, TrailSport Blackout, TrailSport Elite, and TrailSport Elite Blackout) comes in at 18 city / 23 highway / 20 combined MPG. If highway efficiency matters, the RTL-based trims have a clear edge.

Blackout versions of the RTL ($46,150) and TrailSport ($49,850, $53,850) carry a premium of roughly $1,200–$1,500 over their non-Blackout counterparts for styling changes rather than mechanical upgrades — the powertrain, fuel economy, and cargo volume are identical. It's a purely cosmetic decision.

The 4Runner is a body-on-frame truck with stronger off-road credentials but a rougher on-road ride; the Passport is a unibody crossover that's more comfortable daily but less capable on serious trails. The Ascent seats up to eight, so if you need a third row, the five-seat Passport isn't the right choice — the Ascent is worth a serious look.
